Following in the Steps of Royalty

I’ve now officially settled into to Copenhagen as my temporary home and have brought it upon myself to explore all that this city has to offer. All the big and elaborate buildings in Copenhagen are either churches or castles. This week, my housemates and I visited Rosenborg Castle! Luckily for us it was the first day in days that the sun stayed out for the entire day.

With my housemates in the King’s garden.

Being in the castle really felt like I was a part of danish culture. Each room was dedicated to a particular time period that documented the different royals that used the room as well as artifacts that were of great importance. The crowned jewels were my favorite to look at. Fun fact: the crown jewels may only be used by the Queen and only within Denmark. If given the chance, I would have loved to give them a try!

Other things I’ve done are seeking out Danes to learn even more about Denmark’s culture. I’ve spent a lot of time with one of my housemate’s host sister. She is about our age and is really interested in learning about American culture. She came over for dinner and we talked about the differences between teens in America and teens in Denmark. Interestingly enough, I was surprised to find out how much Danes know about America. They are up to date on our politics as well as popular news that surround our media. I felt bad not knowing much about Denmark and their policies. I had never been in a position before where I had to be a ‘spokesperson’ on behalf of American attitudes and politics. I found myself to be in a hard spot trying to explain why America does the things it does. In those moments I saw how America and Americans are perceived by the outside world.

Everyday I’m faced with something new, and each time I come out of it stronger!

Talk to you guys soon!
